• Celebration of the Life of Larry Boyle
  
  Dear colleagues,
  
  Larry Boyle, former Dean of Commerce at Loyola, veteran professor/administrator, and a former CUPARUC member passed away last December.
  I know that many of you would have known Larry and we have been asked to let you know that there will be a celebration of his life on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. It will be held in the Loyola Chapel, 7141 Sherbrooke St.

• Annual General Meeting & Reception
  
  Dear members,
  
  Please find below the Notice of Meeting/Agenda for the 2024 CUPARUC Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Reception.
  The AGM will be held on Monday, June 3 in the Loyola Jesuit Hall and Conference Centre, located in the Refectory Building on the Loyola Campus.
  The meeting is scheduled from 10:00 a.m. � 12:00 noon and will be in-person. Doors will open at 9:30 and light morning refreshments will be available for attendees. Laurie Kerr from Human Resources will be available starting at 9:30 to answer questions and address issues from retirees.
  A Zoom option will be available for those who either cannot attend or are uncomfortable attending. However, Zoom links will only be available for paid-up members.
  The AGM will be followed by a catered reception from 12:30 � 3:00 p.m., featuring sandwiches, salads, desserts, wine, beer and soft beverages. The reception will be casual in nature and provides an opportunity to catch-up with friends and colleagues, discuss issues of interest with the CUPARUC Executive and, perhaps, make some new friendships and acquaintances. If you are unable to attend the meeting but are available for the reception, please feel free to join us.
  The reception is free for members who paid their fees for 2023-24 or 2024-25. There will, however, be a charge of $30 for member�s guests and past members who are not up to date with their membership dues. Membership renewal forms for 2024-25 are included in this mailing.
  To ensure adequate food and materials are available for the AGM and reception and to provide Zoom links for those attending virtually, we require people to register for the event. To finalize numbers with the caterer, registrations must be received by the morning of Friday, May 24. Registration requests received after that date will be subject to availability.
  To register, please send an email to cuparuc@concordia.ca or leave a message on our voicemail line (438-772-9119). In either case, please leave your name (and that of your guest if appropriate) and indicate whether you will be attending the meeting and/or reception. For those attending the meeting, please specify whether you will be attending in-person or by Zoom videoconference. Please note that if you have indicated attendance through the CUPARUC Facebook page, you still must register using our email or voicemail options.

  Proposed Agenda for AGM of June, 2024

• To all current CUPARUC members,
  
  Call for CUPARUC Executive Committee Members

  CUPARUC is currently seeking members who may be interested in joining the CUPA Executive Committee or participating in the work of one of the portfolios.
  A new Executive slate will be elected at the upcoming Annual General Meeting (June 3, 2024). Many of the current Executive group are finishing their terms, so several opportunities exist. You can take an active role in helping plan future directions for your organization. There is much interesting work to do, whether it be within one of the existing portfolios, expanding our membership base, planning/coordinating events or developing new ideas and approaches.
  If you are interested in participating in the work of CUPARUC but don�t wish to join the Executive team, there are still many opportunities. The Executive can always use the help of members in carrying out and expanding the work within the various portfolios.
  
  If you are interested in joining the Executive Committee or participating in the work of one of the portfolios, please email us at cuparuc@concordia.ca . We will contact you to provide more information about the Executive Committee. Based on the expressions of interest received, a Nominating Committee Report will be prepared, and recommendations will be made to members at the Annual General Meeting. Following the presentation of the Nominating Committee report, the election/appointment of the Executive Committee takes place. Although nominations can be accepted at the meeting, it is preferable if you advise us in advance in order that a full list of nominees can be prepared and circulated to all meeting attendees at the beginning of the meeting.

• Tuition Fee Increases for Out-of-Province and International Students
  
  Dear members,
  As I am sure many of you are already aware, the current CAQ Quebec government recently confirmed that tuition fees for out-of-province and international students will be increased, starting in fall 2024. It is obvious that this will have a serious impact on Concordia University, as well as on other universities in Quebec.
  The following letter (pdf) from President Graham Carr was circulated last week to faculty and staff at Concordia and posted on the Concordia University website. I thought it would be worthwhile sharing President Carr�s message with the CUPARUC community.

• CUPARUC now has a Facebook Page
  
  We are excited to welcome you to the new CUPA /ARUC Facebook group! The new group is a one-stop tool for information dissemination, queries/discussions regarding CUPA as well as a resource of offerings for its members. But, most importantly, it is a means to (re)unite all Concordia retirees in a medium that offers social connectivity (rekindling of Con U friendships as well as creating new ones); offers helpful everyday info (where to get a Flu shot; discounts for seniors, etc); provides a place to respectfully discuss and share views, recipes, stories, crafts - to name but a few.
  
  CUPA plays an important role in our retirement livelihood and it also has a role to play in ensuring that all Concordia retirees are 'taken care of' on a social level, too.

• An Important Update - July 2, 2020
  

  CUPARUC HAS A NEW TELEPHONE NUMBER
  
  To better serve our members, CUPARUC has implemented a new telephone number and voicemail service.
  
  Our new number is: 438-772-9119.
  
  The new system will allow you to leave messages of up to two minutes in length and automatically prompts the Association when messages are received, which will enable us to respond to your questions and concerns in a more timely manner.
  
  In addition to contacting us by telephone, you can also reach the Association by email at cuparuc@concordia.ca.
  
  We have received many enquiries since the last message we sent out in early May regarding membership renewals and other topics. The CUPARUC Executive will be meeting shortly to discuss how we move forward in the current environment and will be sending out a communiqu� later this month.

• Fall General Meeting & Christmas Luncheon (2018)
  Cuparuc combined the Fall General Meeting and the Annual Christmas Luncheon into the same event.
  The Meeting/Luncheon took take place in the morning and early afternoon of Friday, December 14, 2018, at the Downtown Campus in the Conference Centre of JMSB.

• Annual Christmas Luncheon
  Our annual Christmas Luncheon was a popular success as usual. We gathered for the first time at the Conference Centre on the ninth floor of the JMSB Bldg on Tuesday, December 12. Good food and fellowship were enjoyed by all. Many thanks to Wendy Hedrich and the other organizers for all their hard work.

  Our annual Christmas Luncheon, always a popular success, took place on Tuesday, December 6, as usual at the Loyola Jesuit Hall and Conference Centre. It was great event and well attended. Pictures from this event will be posted soon.

  New security measures adopted by the University in January of 2016 made it impossible for us to continue to maintain our pensioners website on a Concordia server. The decision has been made to move our website to another server. Please note NEW ADDRESS below:

  Please change all your links and shortcuts. The address is very much like the old one, except there is no period between cuparuc and concordia. Please note that there are two 'c' s together, in the middle of this address. The capital letters are optional and are provided only for clarity.

The annual Christmas luncheon was held on Thursday, December 12, for the first time on the Loyola campus. The facilities were wonderful and everyone had a great time. 2011 Events

The Annual Christmas Luncheon was held on December 7 at the Faculty Club. Members gathered to meet old friends, to socialize, to enjoy a great meal together, to sing some Christmas songs and to rock to the country & western rhythms of our very own Concordia Buckaroos. See the Pictures from the luncheon, kindly provided by Doreen Hutton, as well as a sample track from the Buckaroos.

 

Dawson Theatre: The Merchant of Venice, November 16 On 16 November. a small but congenial band of CUPARUC members met at Avesta, a Turkish restaurant near the Forum, for what was for some of us an esoteric (but for all of us a very enjoyable) supper before walking to the Dawson Theatre to see a solid performance of The Merchant of Venice given by the graduating class of the College's theatre students. We joined the cast afterwards in joyous celebration of their work. We're hoping to see a good crowd at the Centaur next semester (Wednesday,21 March, matimee) for The Game of Love and Chance, an English version of Marivaux's witty comedy Le Jeu de l'�mour et du Hasard. Pointe-�-Call�res Museum: Wine for the Gauls, October 13
A good crowd (17) showed up for lunch in the Museum's elegant restaurant overlooking the Old Port. Afterwards, we joined our tour guide Philippe,full of enthusiasm and good humour, for a guided tour of the exhibit, which traces the history of viniculture from ancient Persia through Egypt,Greece ahd Rome to Gaul, viewing a fascinating array of artifacts illustrating the various methods of preparing. refining, storing and shipping white and red wines.

St. Henri Historial Walk: September 21 A dozen of us gathered in the early aftenoon to meet our guide, Robert Forand, at the Place St-Henri metro station What followed, under a blazing early autumn sun, was a leisurely stroll through what was once an industrial district, with row-houses of different style for the rich and for the working class. St-Henri has an abundance of small parks;we paused in two of them. out of the way of traffic rush. The house where the t�wn's mayor once lived and Gabrielle Roy's one-time dwelling were special points of interest, as was the Art Deco style of the fire-station where the local historical society has rich archives. After more than two hours, we still had much to cover. Perhaps for another time? Geoffrey Adams

The Annual Christmas Luncheon was held on December 8 at the Faculty Club. Members gathered to meet old friends, to socialize, to enjoy a great meal together and to sing some Christmas songs. See the Pictures from the luncheon, kindly provided by Shirley Robinson.

 

A Night on the Town On 16 November, more than twenty of us- a welcme mix of familiar faces and new retirees- met for an early supper Au Petit Extra on Ontario St. near Papineau before heading to the Lion d'Or cabaret next door. A long table had been reserved for us at the back of the restaurant, allowing us to chat back and forth through the surrounding buzz aa the room filled up. The chalkboard menu was inviting anf the food delicious, pleasantly washed down with a respectable house wine. At 7:30, we moved next door to a series of reserved tables near the stage at the Lion d'Or where the popular chanteuse Danielle Odd�ra gave us a passionate rendering of Jacques Brel songs, accompanied on piano by Jean Marchand (who was also in great voice). Altogether, a delightful night on the town! -Geoffrey Adams

 

Easter Island Exhibit at the Pointe-à-callières Museum On October 20, a pleasant early autumn day, a dozen CUPARUC members and family met for lunch in the attractive restaurant at the Mus�e Pointe-�- Calli�re Others joined us later to tour the Museum's current exhibit, devoted to Easter Island. Our guide, obviously enthusiastic about the show, led us past a rare and remarkable collection of artefacts,explaining how the pieces on display have helped scholars to demystify much of the political, economic and religious evolution of this remote and isolated island in the mid-Pacific. An altogether enjoyable as well as enlightening afternoon! -Geoffrey Adams
