Fall General Meeting: Thursday, October 30, 2014
Our Fall General Meeting was held on Thursday, October 30, 2014, in room HH-763/765, on the Sir George Williams campus at 10:00. After an abridged set of reports, there was a general discussion of what changes might be in store for pensioners in lights of current demographics and the government's programme of pension reform. There was also discussion of the attempt, at the pension information meeting in September, to change our delegate through a vote on site.
Our guest speaker, Ms. Krista Brecht, a registered nurse with experience in pain management and palliative care, gave an excellent and well-received presentation on the nature of pain and of pain management.
Aging and pain is a process that converts healthy adults into frail ones with diminished reserves in most physiologic systems and an exponentially increasing vulnerability to most diseases. Pain should not be seen as an intractable symptom in isolation but rather should be approached as part of a group of changes that together predict worsening health status and decreased ability to respond to stressors. We will discuss some general principles and statistics of pain in the older adult; identify multiple pain conditions affection the older adult; define consequences of pain; and explore assessment, management strategies along with community resources. - Krista Brecht
